On the northern shore of Ulthuan's Inner Sea lies the forested kingdom of Avelorn. It is place of magic and wonder even by elven standards, and is the oldest Kingdom of the Asur. The elves here are ruled by both the Everqueen of Avelorn, Alarielle, and by the High Prince of this green forest. The land here is blessed by Isha, and the green forests and vales that cover the land like a blanket are bathed in an eternal summer.

The Everqueen has no fixed place of residence, instead moving throughout this bountiful paradise as she chooses. She is attended to by her chosen consort, Prince Tyrion, and by her Handmaidens. Only a hundred elf maids serve in the Maiden Guard at any one time, picked from the most naturally gifted, bravest and most loyal followers of the Everqueen.

To most Avelorn is considered a paradise, but it has had to endure much torment over the years. Invasions by the hordes of Chaos and the vengeful Druchii have scarred the land, and even though it quickly heals, a darkness remains in the most remote parts of the kingdom. Beastmen and Daemons lurk deep in the forests, in dank caves and rotten glades. Ferocious creatures such as griffons and manticores descend into the forests from the Anulii mountains regularly, giving the citizens of Avelorn plenty of practice at fighting these beasts. At the same time, the lush woodland of Gaen Vale shelters powerful creatures sacred to the High Elves, including pegasi and unicorns, bringing heroes seeking to tame them from all over Ulthuan.

In the Age of Reckoning, the forces of House Uthorin are intent on securing their invasion of Ulthuan by striking deep at the heart of Ulthuan. They know that the capture of Avelorn and Alarielle will deal a grievous blow to the High Elves' capacity to fight back. The Dark Elves begin to raze and despoil the timeless forests as they search for the Everqueen, who has gone into hiding, in the process attracting the attentions of the agents of Nurgle and Tzeentch.
